Weed Update June 2025

On June 17th, Aquatic Weed control was able to take a look at Lake of the Woods (LOTW) to inspect the Starry Stonewort (SSW) growth. They noted that SSW is behind where it was last year. While the SSW isn’t too bad yet, there is a large amount of other plant growth in the lake.

A native plant called Small Pondweed is very widespread this year and accounts for a lot of the plant growth residents are seeing.  As a reminder, native aquatic weeds cannot be widely treated per the DNR.

There is also more Culyleaf Pondweed than normal for this time of year in LOTW because the water has been so cold for so long.

AWC did not see any EWM at all, which is great. It has already cleared up from the early season spraying and we expect some multi-year control for EWM by continuing to use Procellacor to treat it.

The  attached map shows 2 high priority SSW areas that were treated earlier this week.  This does not represent all of the SSW in the lake.  SSW could become problematic in other areas as well, especially in the north end of the lake.  We expect that SSW will really take off as we get some warmer temperatures and it will be further assessed in the coming weeks.
